Astro WW was originially written for use in Amateur Astronomy. It was originally designed to get your location for entering into planetarium and astronomical mount control programs. With the release of version 2.0, Astro WW has been expanded for a wide variety of uses. It will now allow you to save your location whenever the user presses the store location button. These locations can be emailed to the user and used to geotag photos for use in Apple's newest iPhoto '09. The email contains the latitude and longitude as well as a direct link to the location on Google Maps.

This new functionality has application in many fields. A realtor could save the location of a home for sale and email the map link for customers to see. A geologist collecting samples could save the locations where they collect samples. The possibilities are endless. These new features were added without removing any of the original functionality.

Astro WW stilll displays a running Universal Time Clock on the front page. The application has an occultation beep and flash timer. Both timers are 300 ms in duration and fire once per second. Either the beep or the flash may be turned off on the preferences page. The audio signal can be recorded by a video camera.

We are currently developing a fiber optic cable that is friction held to the iPhone or iPod Touch. This cable will allow the user to take the optical flash from the device to the telescope where it can be recorded by a CCD camera. Check back for price and availability.

We will be posting a video showing how to use the location data for geotagging images. Unfortunately, the current iPhoto will not allow one to directly enter latitude and longitude coordinates. I have submitted a feature request for that to be added. Currently to geotag your photos you must use an EXIF editor to add the information and then import the photos into iPhoto. The steps necessary to geotag your photos will be shown in the screencast video.
